This milling plant produces kenaf powder from core fiber which has been separated from bast fiber in a decorticator.  Kenaf core fiber which is made into a powder has many industrial uses from making building materials, biocomposites for automobile interiors,  to absorbents, drilling mud and other uses.










· Hydrophobic - Kenaf Core Powder  can safely be applied in spill situations on water and will remain surface for long periods, allowing for easy recovery.


Spread manually or mechanically from upwind side of spill. Use screened forks or suction devices to remove oil saturated Kenaf Core Powder. On flowing water, spread Kenaf Core Powder  upstream of a boom to absorb trapped oil.






Spread Kenaf Core Powder  on the spill until all the oil is absorbed. Pour onto the spill from height of about 6 inches to avoid dispersion of absorbent. Spread on spill area to an average thickness of 2 inches. Till Kenaf Core Powder  into the soil past the contamination.

Use as a sweeping compound to remove traces of oil. Sweep up the oil- saturated Kenaf Core Powder  using a stiff broom, and place in a suitable container or land farm.




In Drums:




Use to fill in space around pack drums as a further safety precaution. On hydrocarbon drums with removable lids, mix Kenaf Core Powder  with liquid until content is absorbed.

Several variations of processed kenaf particles made available through the Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station were examined: milled core, milled fines, and ultra fines. [minus ¼ inch, minus 3/16 inch, and kenaf dust]




The ultra fines were by far the most efficient kenaf material tested due to their high surface area. Their adsorption capabilities come closest of all plant-based products to synthetic sorbents. Milled fines have a very even and very reproducible size distribution.  The contain many pores which will not only sorb oil but will also allow for less leakage or release of hazardous fluids from sorbents is of a critical nature. Milled core performs very well when tested against conventional granular products. It could potentially be used in socks, pillow, booms, or as an industrial floor sweep. Optimum oil sorbency results were achieved by combining high surface area core particles with sorbent fines.




Hydrophobicity tests have shown that kenaf particle will float on the surface of water for a long period of time. The kenaf does have a small affinity for water that increases as the size of the particles decrease. This is consistent with the increase in oil sorption of the particle.




Scanning electron microscopic studies indicate that the cell wall of kenaf a material is microporous. It has a porosity of approximately 90%, allowing oil to be sorbed readily into the material. The fibrous surface of kenaf provides a good site for nucleation and, as a result, efficient oil adsorption.




The all natural, organic source for kenaf sorbents may allow for ease of disposal and application, areas which may pose difficulties for some sorbents. Another critical concern is that kenaf sorbent products are a renewable, annual resource, not being composed of petroleum or synthetic chemical materials.
